National Sleep Foundation Announces New Board of Directors
Steven E. Lerman, MD, MPH Elected as Chair

Washington, D.C. (October 24, 2024): National Sleep Foundation’s (NSF) Board of Directors have elected Steven E. Lerman, MD, MPH, to serve as Chair and lead its board of seasoned clinicians, researchers and business professionals. Dr. Lerman has been a member of the NSF board for the past eight years, most recently serving as Treasurer on its Executive Committee and as Chair of its Finance Committee.

Dr. Lerman previously presided as Chair over the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) committee that developed the Fatigue Risk Management Systems for Personnel in the Refining and Petrochemical Industries standard and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine’s (ACOEM) Presidential Task Force of Fatigue Risk Management in the Workplace that developed ACOEM’s Guidance Statement on the topic.

While a Fellow of the ACOEM, Dr. Lerman also collaborated and published with the National Institute for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (NIOSH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Lerman also had a distinguished career as a member of the Medicine and Occupational Health Department and ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, Inc. Before joining NSF’s board, Dr. Lerman chaired NSF’s conferences on Sleep Health and Safety.

“I am deeply honored to assume the role of Chair of the National Sleep Foundation. NSF is the leading voice in our space, with a longstanding and deep history as the public’s most established, independent resource dedicated to sleep health and safety. I look forward to the upcoming year as we continue to serve the public through our evidence-based and consensus-driven mission work,” said Lerman.

“We’re very fortunate to have a professional like Steve leading our board at NSF. He has a keen understanding of NSF and our mission, and particularly strong expertise and insights on the importance of sleep health, safety, and performance to employers, the public’s working population, and beyond,” said John Lopos, National Sleep Foundation CEO. “Lerman’s public health background and perspective are fundamental to our purpose and position among other sleep health stakeholders,” continued Lopos.

Susan Redline, MD, MPH, will serve as Vice Chair. Redline is Senior Physician, Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Matt Mellott, CEO of Forefront Dermatology, will serve as Treasurer, and Rafael Pelayo, MD, Clinical Professor at Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, will serve as Secretary.
